When Maria moved to the Bronx as a teenager, she missed her grandma’s home cooking so badly. So she found herself a traditional cast-iron pot (caldero) along with the plantains, pork shoulders, beans, cilantro, and peppercorns that make up Puerto Rican food so that she could re-create her grandma’s recipes. Now a grandma herself, Maria prepares the family table for her husband, daughter, grandson, and son-in-law.
